Home to the South Downs, West Sussex is the ideal place to get away from it all, and to push yourself and fill those lungs. You’ll be taking in some of the freshest air and most inspirational views. There’s so much to admire, you won’t want the weekend to end.

To get the best of the views, put on your walking boots or running shoes and head for the hills. The vistas from the top of the South Downs to the Surrey Hills and out to sea are utterly spectacular. And let’s not forget the reward of the downhills too.

You can hike or run along the ridge of the South Downs, take a circular route connecting classic English villages, or explore the miles of footpaths and bridleways that criss-cross open countryside. We also have guided walks, to help you experience the best of everything. If you are a thru-walker taking the 100-mile challenge, do stop off for a well-earned meal, a refreshing drink or an overnight stay.

If you’re a mountain biker, you’ll be in your element here. The area boasts some of the longest, most stunning Mountain Biking routes in the South East. There are superb off-road tracks among rolling chalk hills, as well as miles of trails and bridleways criss-crossing the surrounding countryside.

There aren’t that many prepared trails, but that’s part of what makes this place so special. You have the freedom to mix and match what’s on offer to create your own challenging routes.

If you prefer the road, you might be up to the challenge of two of the toughest hill climbs in the country. Or, if you’d rather something a little more sedate, meander through classic English villages with the backdrop of the Downs never far away. If you're coming for a family visit, don't miss out on one of our car free routes such as the Downs Link, or a ride along the promenade with plenty of places to stop for an ice cream!

The West Sussex Coast offers more than just great views and a lovely location from which to enjoy a day by the sea. There are a huge range of watersports on offer and whether you are an experienced professional, an individual, a group looking to try something new or a family looking for a fun way to entertain their children while keeping them healthy and active, there is plenty to do. From outdoor swimming and sunbathing, to boat trips, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and adrenaline-packed activities like super-fast inflatable adult water rides, there truly is something for everyone.

MTB loop taking in South Downs Way in the East

I am more than a little bit in love with cycling and the South Downs. I am always on my mountain bike or cyclocross bike on the hills and when I am not cycling I am thinking about it. I feel very lucky to live where I do and have the West Sussex countryside on my doorstep, and I make the most of it with all the cycling and cake eating I can manage!
